Jayakanthan, often called JK by Tamil readers, was one of the most respected Tamil literary figures of the 20th century. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Jnanpith Award, which are among the highest literary honours in India. He passed away in 2015.

Unlike popular romance or thriller writers, Jayakanthan wrote serious literary fiction. His work dealt with social issues, moral questions, and human psychology in ways that pushed Tamil literature into new territory.

His literary style

Jayakanthan was a writer who took on hard topics. His novels and short stories explored:

  • Caste and social inequality in Tamil society
  • Women's rights and feminist questions
  • The lives of working class and marginalised people
  • Moral conflicts in modern Indian life
  • Religion, faith, and personal belief

His most famous novel Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal won the Sahitya Akademi award and is considered a Tamil classic. The story handles complex moral questions about a woman who is sexually assaulted and how society treats her after.
